The Importance of a good Domain NameThere are a number of things you may like to consider when chosing
a domain name for your website be it a personal or business site. Below
we have listed the main cionsiderations. Memorable Domain NameIt is ideal if first time visitors remember your domain name so they might visit your website again and maybe pass it on to other potential visitors increasing your websites popularity. >>back to top Search Engine Compatable Domain NameIf you would like your website to be ranked highly there are numerous things that can be done to help your chances of appearing on the first page of results for certain search terms. A main consideration would be to carefully choose your domain name so it targets specific search terms related to your site (i.e. if you were a gardener and you covered the whole of London, a good domain name would be gardener-london.co.uk, or london-gardener.co.uk). >>back to top Domain Name LengthShort domain names can be good for a couple of reasons. A domain name such as goody.com will easily be remembered and increase the chances of return visits. Also, as it is short it is easier to type and less prone for misspelling. On the other hand a short domain name such as hdpxad.com can be easily forgotten, easily misspelt, and as it hasn't got any obvious meaning it won't suggest what type of website is at that domain name. Long domain names have similar pros and cons. The longer the domain name is, the more likely it is to be forgotten or misspelt if the words aren't easily identifiable. (ie wecheckdomainnameavailabilty.com is a bit of a mouthful, whereas domain-checker-plus.com suggests the content of the site and is easy to remember). >>back to top Domain Name ExtensionThe extension (i.e. .com, .co.uk) of your domain can be very important when you are aiming your website towards a certain locale. To use the 'London gardener' example again, we can say that a more suited extension for his domain would be a country specific extension such as .co.uk, it is unlikely that he would want a .com extension as this would suggest he was avaible to garden any where in the world as a .com is seen as a US or international extension. >>back to top Descriptive Domain NameAgain for the purpose of memorability and search engine placement it is good practise to buy a domain name that gives the visitor an idea of what your site is about. Say the gardener bought the domain lon-gar-se.co.uk it doesn't suggest that he is a london gardener who covers the South East of England, so while he may get visits, a lot of these will more than likely be getting to his site in error, generating him no work through his site. Whereas gardener-london-se.co.uk is more likely to do well in search engines as it is targetting the search terms gardener and London, but also lets visitors know exactly what the site is about so less will arrive there in error. >>back to top |
